I have had countless conversations with individuals and couples that as they age, they feel that their current home is "too much work" both inside and out. When we begin to explore where their next move to take them, there is often hesitation toward moving to a condo type setting. Others look at downsizing to a bungalow, but feel that this is more of a lateral move and want to put money in their pocket for future generations, and/or not go through a major renovation of a 1950's -70's built bungalow.
In 2000 the Rotary Club of Oakville purchased land and erected 34 semi detached bungalow/bungaloft properties in a community called Woodside Mews. The idea was to provide a place where seniors can age in place, and still retain autonomy and certain level of independence while living in a place where they have a garage and can walk outside of their door into the broader community. The community of Woodside Mews solved the problem of "too much work" by providing to all members the following services:
Clubhouse access on site for all complex residents
Outdoor maintenance; landscape, grass cutting, snow removal and shovelling
Spring/Fall maintenance; exterior window washing
Furnace, a/c and humidistat service, cleaning of eves in fall and replacement of smoke alarm batteries
Weekly removal of garbage and recycling from your door to curb
